Overview:

This course begins with a high level overview of the fiber   optic communications systems. Using a model fiber optic   communications system, various technologies are   examined to introduce the participant to the technologies   and terminology used in fiber optics. The specific   protocols of SONET are introduced in great detail in   order to prepare the participants for expanding the knowledge in the area of testing, network planning, network analyzing, and network trouble-shooting.

Various Networks Elements (NEs) such as ADMs, OADMs, DWDMs, DACSs, and transponders are discussed in detail. This course also includes a hands-on introduction to fiber optics and SONET with each participant preparing for setting up a SONET signal using the most popular SONET test equipment in the industry.

Target Audience:

This two-day course is ideal for anyone interested in understanding the principles of fiber optics and SONET, and how they are used in telecommunication networks. Also, anyone interested in exploring the field of SONET in testing, network analysis, network planning and network trouble-shooting.

Course Content:

After completing this course, each participant will have a better understanding of the following topics and be able to:

  • Describe the characteristics of optical fibers, such as Reflection, Single Mode & Multi Mode Fibers, Chromatic Dispersion, Wavelength Windows, Fiber Contamination, Attenuation, and Connector Types.
  • Describe various optical components, advantages and disadvantages of LASERS and LEDs, Transmitters Characteristics, Output Power, Data Rates, Output Spectrum, Insertion Loss and Fiber Termination.
  • List of typical testing and instrumentation used in fiber optic communications and SONET systems, such as OTDR, Sources and Power Meter. Additionally, calculating Link Budgets, Power and Attenuation.
  • List of SONET Transmission Rates.
  • Describe the Basic Building Block of SONET.
  • List the difference between UPSR and BLSR ring topologies.
  • Explain the SONET synchronization hierarchy.
  • Describe a SONET ring and the various NEs that support its services.
  • Identify the sub-units of a SONET system that can be engineered, Optical AMD, Repeater, Regenerator, and Element Managers.
  • Explain the concept of the Section, Line, and Path in SONET.
  • Describe the SONET OAM&P functionality.
  • Perform some basic testing using Digital Lightwave and HP Omni SONET test equipment.
